Title:

""Perp in custody for 488," the officer radioed in."

Subtitle

""Proceeding to transport for processing. Over""

"That's a roger, 19," replied the female dispatcher. Peggy leaned closer to the heavy gauge wire barrier between her and the officer and reminded him that the can openers were still on the trunk of the car, her voice mousy, broken, respectful. The agitated officer turned around and responded with the most defensive tone he could muster, "Merchandise is not secured until dispatch has been notified!" He let go an emphatic blow-hole sigh. Then he pushed open his door and hurried around to the back of the cruiser, not returning in the expected time. It was quite awhile before he returned. When he finally got behind the wheel he was empty-handed -- no can openers. He radioed in some indecipherable dispatch lingo, typed something into a laptop mounted onto his dashboard next to his shotgun, fastened his seatbelt, started the vehicle and drove back to the front of the store right in front of the curious crowd."
