Title:

"Peggy fought back urges to insult the little boy."

Subtitle

"That would be a mistake she was wary of repeating. Memories of ugly run-ins with defensive mothers were still fresh on her mind. Then the boy spoke to her with a mouthful of black cud.

"Who are you talking to?" he asked.

Peggy pointed to where the man previously stood and said, "To this dear old friend of mine who watches what he eats."

"Who?" The boy was genuinely confused.

She decided to ignore the question and resume her conversation with the gentleman. But she discovered he was no longer there. She looked around. Through the glass doors of the store entry she caught sight of him walking away in the parking lot. With can openers still in hand she hastened after him, setting off the store alarm."
